Food Waste & Soil Health: Feeding the People and the Land

Globally, one-third of all food produced is thrown away. Reducing this waste allows us to care for neighbors facing food insecurity, support local farmers, and nurture creation. As Genesis 2:15 reminds us, God places us here to tend and care for the land—and caring for the land ultimately enables us to care for people. This connection is beautifully stated in Leviticus 23:22: "When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field to its very border, nor shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest; you shall leave them for the poor and for the alien: I am the Lord your God."

To tackle these challenges, the Green Teams of Davidson College Presbyterian Church, Davidson United Methodist Church, and Saint Alban’s invite you to the Sustainability Summit 2026.

  • Date: November 4, 2026

  • Time: Doors open at 5:30 PM; interactive event runs 6:00 – 8:00 PM

  • Location: DCPC Congregation House

  • Perks: Free admission, snacks, refreshments, and complimentary childcare.

An expert panel will discuss the spiritual, environmental, and civic impacts of our food systems:

  • Kris Steele (Co-founder, Crown Town Compost) will share how composting regenerates soil and reconnects people to the earth.

  • Tresca McSwain (Society of St. Andrew) will discuss gleaning and strengthening local food security.

  • Bruce Batman (DUMC Community Garden) and Rebecca Esque (Ada Jenkins) will share how local partnerships directly feed the community.

Two Ways to Act Everyday

In recognition of the United Nations' International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, the Green Teams invite you to join two practical community campaigns from October 1 through November 30:

  1. Feed the Soil, Not Landfills: Food scraps buried in landfills produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Composting transforms those scraps into nutrient-rich soil. Click here to learn more and receive a free compost bucket.

  2. Leave the Leaves: Support the Town of Davidson’s seasonal initiative by keeping fallen leaves on the ground to enrich soil and protect wildlife. Sign the online pledge

to receive a free custom garden flag.

Join us to connect with local resources and discover your next green living step.
