Love in Action

Writer's picture: Courtney FossettCourtney Fossett

One simple verse, John 15:12, “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you”, can inspire us to do great things. We have heard it from Bishop Curry in his acclaimed book “Love is the Way”. On the surface it seems like such an easy task to love others and yet, this can be challenging. How to love those that might frustrate us at times or can challenge us. To me that is what makes love so enduring, that we are capable of this emotion that can bind us with others no matter the circumstance. Although sometimes challenging to experience in some situations, we must give ourselves over to the idea of love no matter the circumstance. In this way, love is magnified in our hearts and spills over to make the difference.

There are many ways we show and experience love, whether it is through family, friends, spouses, partners, and even our precious animals, we are all capable of this emotion that can transcend all others. As in Hebrews 10:24, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds”. The simple impacts we can make on one another by giving and showing love can be monumental. It makes the recipient feel they are worthy and welcomed, while our hearts also are full having given it.

My position gives me the opportunity to give and experience love in many different situations. From love received from St. Alban’s children giving me a hug or drawing pictures for my office to the amazing St. Alban’s families that encourage and support all the programs we implement as well as one another. There is another love that I am honored to be a part of and that is from our St. Alban’s Youth. Whether it is participating in Sunday School, Youth Group, or even a retreat, they constantly show me what love can do. They are our future, and whether it is writing a recommendation, signing off on service hours, or laughing until we almost cry playing silly games, I am humbled to be a part of their journey.

We just wrapped up another successful ski trip and even with a few challenges getting rentals, or having to wait, each of them talked, laughed, and exhibited grace, patience, and even love in a somewhat stressful situation. They checked in with each other, waited for each other, and helped each other. When you are in a tense moment, it can feel overwhelming for these youth to maintain composure and support one another, I was truly in awe. I want to teach them to enjoy the journey no matter the outcome and then occasionally they surprise me with showing me that “love is the way”.

Without the support of amazing volunteer chaperones, these events would not take place, and I am forever grateful for all they do to show support for me so we can make the journey great for our youth. On this journey of life, be it with our St. Alban’s children, youth, families, or volunteers, love is stated clearly in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”
