John 14:1-3 states, “Don’t let your heart by troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also.” Jesus speaks to his disciples and assures them they will always have a home with God and telling them he will return.
This passage popped up for me this week and it struck a chord as I begin to navigate the search for a new home. What do we believe home to be and how it is defined for each of us may differ. We are not necessarily defined by the space, but often who is with us or the feelings it brings. For our recent graduates, home takes on a new definition, their parent’s home, or maybe a new space in college or with roommates. It begins to look different through stages of life with young children, older children, children moving out or back in, empty nest, retirement, single, married, widowed, or sometimes just a place to lay our heads.
The word “home” brings a sense of security, a place of respite, recovery, and comfort. We can also reflect on our ultimate home with God in heaven. He has a plan, and he will prepare a place for us. We have free will and a choice in life and with faith we often land exactly where we are supposed to be. He prepares a place for us and his plan provides the place for us to land. We are led to the home where we will prosper and feel comforted by God’s love and his plan for us. Ultimately, comfort comes from our faith in God’s plan and his love for us where we will always find a home.
