A week from this Sunday, on October 15th, we will be welcoming our new Assistant Bishop, the Right Revered Jennifer Brooke-Davidson to Saint Alban’s. It is always exciting when one of our bishops comes to visit us. It reminds us of our connection to the wider Episcopal Church and the larger Body of Christ. It is an opportunity for our bishops to see what a wonderful community we have here at Saint Alban’s. Above all, it is a time when members of our growing congregation will be confirmed, received, and reaffirmed with the laying-on-of -hands of the bishop.
I have had the great privilege of spending time with some of our teens, as they learn about the Episcopal Church and the Christian faith and discern whether they are prepared to make a mature public affirmation of the baptismal vows made on their behalf at their baptisms. This is a significant moment for them. I have been truly impressed with this group’s willingness to engage in an open and authentic exploration of our church and the life of faith. They have asked some good and challenging questions along the way! Whatever they each decide about being confirmed, I am very proud of the work they have done in our Confirmation Class and grateful to have had this time with them. Each of their decisions will be honored and celebrated!
The liturgy with the bishop at 10:30 on the 15th will not just be about them or the adults who will be confirmed, received, or reaffirmed. It will be an opportunity for all of us to come together to show and give voice to our support for them in their life in Christ. It will be an opportunity for us to show hospitality and appreciation to Bishop Jennifer for her presence and her ministry in our diocese. And it will be another opportunity for us to gratefully celebrate our Saint Alban’s family and even to appropriately “show off” what a vibrant congregation we are.
I hope that you will plan to join us for this day of communal joy, support, and celebration.
Yours in Christ,
Kevin+
