A Message from Our Senior Warden

“Would you be interested in serving on Vestry?”

I was surprised to hear these words from another Vestry member 3 years ago. At first, a long list of reasons to say “No” went through my mind. I didn’t think I had been a member at St. Alban’s long enough (only a couple of years at the time). My faith wasn’t certain enough (is it ever?). I didn’t know enough people in the parish. I barely even knew what Vestry was!

But after almost three years on Vestry, I’m incredibly thankful I said “Yes!” I have gotten to know folks across the congregation that I would not have otherwise. I have had a front-row seat to the amazing energy and care that our clergy and staff bring to St. Alban’s. And I have learned so much about this parish, especially how generous and caring everyone here is.

I had no idea what Vestry entailed when I was asked, so I’ll share a little bit about what we do. The Vestry gathers each month for a short worship and meeting, as well as a one-day retreat in early Spring and an informal gathering, usually in Summer. We vote on church business, oversee the finances, and help out where we can. Most Vestry members are paired with a committee or group in the parish, which is a great way to learn about the multitude of ministries and meet new folks. We also help on Sunday mornings – you’ve likely seen a Vestry member making coffee and helping to greet visitors at each service.

More than anything, Vestry members are committed to the well-being of our church, which is currently growing and thriving. At our parish meeting in January, we will elect four new Vestry members for a three-year term. So now it’s my turn to ask you: “Would you be interested in serving on Vestry?” Or do you know someone who would be? If so, we are taking nominations! Please reach out to me, Carmen, or any current Vestry member to learn more. If something inside you says, “I think I could do that”, then I would encourage you, go for it! I’m glad I said “Yes!”
